“JSW Steel in Talks for 20% Stake Acquisition in Whitehaven Coal’s Blackwater Mine, Valued at $750M-$1B”

“JSW Steel is reportedly in discussions to acquire a 20 percent stake in Australia’s Whitehaven Coal’s Blackwater mine, sources familiar with the matter reveal. The deal is estimated to be valued between $750 million and $1 billion.

The Blackwater mine, located in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, stands as one of the largest open-cut metallurgical coal producers in the area, with an anticipated average output of 14.8 million tonnes of saleable metallurgical coal annually over the next five years.

While JSW Steel has not officially confirmed the development, Whitehaven Coal had previously announced its intent to sell a 20 percent stake in the mine to global steelmakers as strategic joint venture partners.

The bidding process is set to conclude by mid-March, with the successful bidder’s announcement expected on or after April 2. Among the interested parties are Australia-based Indian company AvidSys Group, alongside Japanese trading houses Itochu, Marubeni, and Sojitz.”
