Prime Minister Narendra Modi Reiterates Government’s Commitment to Farmers Following Increase in Sugarcane FRP to ₹340 per Quintal.
“Our government is dedicated to fulfilling every resolution concerning the welfare of our farmer brothers and sisters nationwide. In this vein, a historic increase in the price of sugarcane purchase has been sanctioned. This move will benefit millions of our sugarcane-producing farmers,” he expressed on X in Hindi.
On Wednesday, the government announced a ₹25 increase in the minimum price mills must pay sugarcane growers, raising it to ₹340 per quintal for the upcoming 2024-25 season beginning in October.
This marks the highest Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane declared by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government since assuming office in 2014. It’s the second time under Modi’s tenure that the FRP has been raised by ₹25 per quintal in a single move.
The decision to increase the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane was made during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This decision, which also precedes the upcoming general elections, holds significance for sugarcane farmers primarily located in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur described the move as ‘historic,’ highlighting that the new FRP of ₹340 per quintal represents an 8 percent increase compared to the current season’s FRP.
Prime Minister Modi’s statement comes at a time when farmers from Punjab are engaged in the Delhi Chalo protest, demanding Minimum Support Price (MSP) support for all crops. On Wednesday, tensions escalated at the Punjab-Haryana Shambhu border as farmers clashed with police, resulting in one protester’s death and injuries to 12 police personnel.
