Elon Musk is set to visit India soon, where he will meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other key officials. The high-profile trip is anticipated to last 48 hours, during which Musk is expected to make significant announcements related to Tesla and Starlink.
In a recent development, Moneycontrol reports that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is expediting the licensing process for Musk’s Starlink service. The report, citing sources, suggests that the department may issue a letter of intent (LoI) and trial spectrum to Starlink soon. A senior government official mentioned that due diligence is in advanced stages, with inter-ministerial discussions underway due to security concerns.
During his visit, Musk is scheduled to meet with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and other industry stakeholders. Invitations from the Prime Minister’s Office could be sent out as early as next week.
This visit follows the meeting between Musk and Modi during the Indian Prime Minister’s trip to the US in June last year. Since then, Musk has been advocating for a reduction in import duties on electric vehicles, which would enable Tesla to start selling its EVs in India.
The Indian government announced a new EV policy last month that reduces import taxes on certain models from 100% to 15% for manufacturers committing to invest $500 million or more and setting up a factory in the country.
According to CNBC TV18, Tesla’s plans for India extend beyond manufacturing cars; the company aims to export them to the global market. Additionally, a report from Hindu Business Line indicates that Tesla is in talks with Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries about a possible joint venture to establish a manufacturing facility in India.
Musk’s visit marks a significant moment for India’s automotive and technology sectors and is expected to bolster ties between Tesla and India, paving the way for new opportunities and advancements.
