Government Waives Duty on Export of 1,000 Tonnes of Kalanamak Rice

In a significant development aimed at boosting rice exports, the government has decided to remove the duty on exports of the Kalanamak variety of rice for shipments totaling up to 1,000 tonnes. This move comes as part of the government’s efforts to promote agricultural exports and provide relief to rice exporters.

Previously, exporters of Kalanamak rice were subject to a duty of 20 percent on overseas shipments. However, with the recent decision, this duty has been waived for exports of up to 1,000 tonnes of Kalanamak rice through six specified customs stations.

According to a notification issued by the Finance Ministry, this duty exemption will come into effect starting Wednesday, providing immediate relief to exporters seeking to capitalize on the international demand for Kalanamak rice.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) had earlier authorized exports of up to 1,000 tonnes of Kalanamak rice through specific customs stations. This decision reflects the government’s commitment to facilitating exports and promoting agricultural trade.

Kalanamak rice, known for its unique aroma and distinct flavor, is a non-basmati variety that has gained popularity both domestically and internationally. However, exports of this rice variety were previously subject to restrictions, hindering the ability of exporters to tap into global markets.

With the removal of export duty and the authorization to export up to 1,000 tonnes, exporters can now take advantage of this opportunity to expand their market reach and meet the growing demand for Kalanamak rice worldwide.

The specified customs stations through which exports of Kalanamak rice are permitted include Varanasi Air Cargo, JNCH (Jawaharlal Nehru Customs House) in Maharashtra, CH (customs house) Kandla in Gujarat, LCS (land customs station) Nepalgunj Road, LCS Sonauli, and LCS Barhni.

Overall, this decision is expected to provide a significant boost to rice exporters and contribute to the growth of India’s agricultural exports sector.
